#1 Series 2 Auto gearbox hardshifting
Does anyone have advice on what to do about a hard shifting auto gearbox, it's on a Series 2 2+2 1969. I have changed the oil and am looking for other possible reasons before taking it in for a full gearbox overhaul.

Yup. Fit a cheap Jag manual, preferably XJ6 overdrive.Bernie2015 wrote:Does anyone have advice on what to do about a hard shifting auto gearbox...

The most frequent cause of this is maladjustment of the kickdown cable, usually in the shape of its being overshortened rather than too long . First thing I would do would be to lengthen the inner and see whether that improves things. In the workshop manual ( in the database here ) the auto trans section ( FF from memory ) provides a lot of good diagnostic information

Before giving up, try find a good tranny shop, they can do a service on it...adjusting the bands, kick down adjustment, and other tests and let you know where you stand. Did you put the proper tranny oil in? Doing a rebuild on the auto requires removing it but I'm pretty sure it require the engine to come out as well.
I'm still running that same slush box since someone who said he had all the XJ6 parts to switch to a manual box never got back to me.

Apologies assuming it's me. I've got four people after various transmissions, collect or ship but am not at home. Will be back in US next week. Have been with family nearly non-stop, either here in US since November. So please email me to my normal address of pc at thewritersbureau dot comalfred wrote: I'm still running that same slush box since someone who said he had all the XJ6 parts to switch to a manual box never got back to me.
