#1 Mk10 jag engine and manual gearbox???

Post by jamie101 » Tue Jan 31, 2017 7:27 am

Hi everyone.
Been a while since ive last been on here so i hope everyone is well since my last visit!
Just wanted a bit of advice i have been offered a 4.2 engine and manual gearbox from a rotten old mk10 jaguar for £500 the engine has triple SU carbs and aparently the gearbox was rebuilt shortly after it was taken out of the rotten mk10.
Just wondering if it was worth buying to use as a spare for my e type mainly just the main block of the engine and the cylinder head and to save the gearbox as mine is not 100% in the e type (starting to windge and whine).
BUT are they the same??? I know the manifold and carbs may be different but usure of what else may be different?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice guys and girls.

If it is an pre-69 short stud block that is complete I would have thought it was worth it for that alone, even if it needs rebuilding. Does it have 3 core plugs or 5? 3 is a short stud, 5 can be more problematic.

What compression ration is marked on the block. I assume it will be an 8:1 or 9:1 motor, not that it really matters.

To etype the engine, other differences will include the sump with the correct oil pick up pipes, water pump, inlet manifold, crank damper and possible breather arrangement. Possibly some other bits as well.

Probably worth checking this engine number on the xke database, as it might have originated somewhere else.

I have just put an old jag engine in an etype, it all worked out spiffingly.

Not sure about your gearbox. I am sure you will find out in a post in a minute or two.

If someone had offered me a 4.2 for £500 I'd have found a trailer and put it in my shed. Come the summer it would be stripped, cleaned, flushed, painted, bores inspected, head checked - valves guides tappet guides followers .....(some time later)......... lightened and balanced,......(even later)....and finally, run on a test jig.

And about £3k later I'd have a brand new condition and very smoothly running 4.2, with slightly warmer cams properly dialed in, slightly higher compression, properly sealed and seated valves, electronic ingition.....

Getting it into my car would be the biggest issue. My garage has a steep drive limiting the space to move the car, store the bonnet, hoik the engine out from and back into the frames. Small problem, much smaller than finding a donor engine for as little as £500.

You can forget the carbs and manifold as they will not fit in an E type . The gearbox essentially should be the same as any all-synchro box , and this is probably the most valuable bit of the assembly . The price is perhaps on the ambitious side , since any scrapyard with Jaguars will yield a 4.2 engine for perhaps £ 50 - 100 ; however, it will usually be the long stud block and - and here is the rub - the vast majority will be automatics , so you will need a flywheel . You might, and I stress might, be able to sell the carbs and manifold separately and get some of your money back

Thank you all for your replys and advice on this before i dip into my pocket. This is why i love this forum. All good honnest down to earth people like my dad and myself! I been on some other forums and all they car about is original nuts and bolts etc and are aposed to do anything to the e type thats not original. I know their point but at the end of the day we want to drive our etype and enjoy it original or not nothing has the shape of the etype nothing compares as enzo ferrari said - the most beautifull car ever made!!!
