I have just bled the brakes using the syringe method. All went well but the brake pedal travel is about 4" ( 100mm) before I feel any resistance.
All components ( master cylinder , servo ) etc are new.
Any ideas?

Maybe you have replaced the discs and pads as well and they need bedding in?
The pedal has a screw adjustment for height.
Maybe once the pads have bedded in you could lower the pedal height by adjusting the screw.
I had to do this on mine. This gets rid of excess pedal travel on the assumption you have all the air out and no leaks.

You either still have air in there or the MC piston has bottomed out.

As James says new pads don't help but 4 inches suggests to me there is still air in the system. It can take several attempts to rid the system of all the air. Incidentally pre filling the calipers before fitting can help...air trapped in the calipers is often the most tricky to shift. A non return pipe on the nipple and a really hard stamp on the pedal is the best solution.
