#1 Dashboard light broken off

Post by PhilBell » Mon Mar 06, 2017 12:53 pm

Has anyone had any success repairing the dashboard light, the one that's riveted to the underside of metal dash roll panel and illuminates the centre section of the dash?

Mine was broken inboard of the rivets and a previous owner had tried gluing it back on, but it fell off again. The two bulb contacts are secured to a non-metallic backing material with brass rivets, then the backing material is riveted to the dash underside. I can't find this part for sale so I assume I will have to drill out the rivets and replace the backing material (anyone know what it is?), then rivet it all back together before riveting the complete piece onto the dash.

Any advice?

I have the same problem. I bought one from SNG and it came with the backing material. It's a little hardboard insulator to keep the lamp socket from touching metal (ground). I'm trying to decide myself if there's an easier way than cutting the old rivets etc etc since it's in an inaccessible place. No plan yet so I'm curious what you decide.

You could replace it with a self adhesive LED strip:

Like David says, self adhesive 12v LED strip is the way to go. Get a warm white one which will keep the original look and feel and also illuminate across the full width of the centre console. Alternatively get a bright white one if you really want a bright clean look.

Don't forget to wipe the surface with white spirit or similar before sticking on.

With the dash out of mine for retrimming, drilling out the old rivets and fitting a replacement light was easy, so I've ordered a new one from SNGB. Thanks for confirming its availability Angus and GSV – I'd missed it on the SNGB site because I was looking in the wrong section.
