morning all

in a quest to service all of the parts in the restoration I looked in to taking the handbrake assembly apart last night

orImage

the problem I am accounting is that set screw part 31 screws into what I am guessing is a captive nut or rivnut within part 30....but the nut is spinning within part 30...and I am struggling to figure out how to stop it rotating
I also have a suspicion the rivnut is aluminium so there may be some bimetallic corrosion between the two which is not helping the situation

I realise I don't "have" to do this, but the parts are rusty and oily so any form of blasting or dipping will leave debris or fluids within part 20 which isn't ideal....plus until I can get part 29 separate from part 20, I cannot loosen spring part 21 which means I cannot get part 17 off....so it all seems to hinge on parts 31 and 30

offers of help welcomed
thanks
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan....could you use a pair of side wire cutters to just nip the rivnut and stop it spinning

Hi Jonathan,

This is what that screw screws in to:

This is the panel underneath the handbrake lever mechanism and you should be able to see where it is riveted through, and subsequently see it turning when you try and undo that screw.

If you can't stop it turning, then the easiest rout would be to drill off the head from that countersunk setscrew.

Cheers.

The rivnut can break off. The whole plate part is available as a replacement.

Thanks all

SNG are listing that cover plate as no longer available....who else would be worth speaking to please to get one..

at least I know what I am trying to disassemble now which helps...so I will persevere...but in case I have to destroy anything I think I will try and sacrifice the set screw as Simon says....at least that is available

NLA..bugger. I'm not sure whether later model handbrake parts might fit. XJ6 etc.
SNG lists 9335 for a lot of cars:

PRODUCT CODE: 9335
420 Saloon • Daimler Hearse • Daimler Limousine • Daimler Sovereign • Daimler Sovereign S1 • E‑Type S1 3.8 • E‑Type S1 4.2 • E‑Type S1 4.2 2+2 • E‑Type S1.5 DHC • E‑Type S1.5 FHC • E‑Type S2 2+2 • E‑Type S2 4.2 • E‑Type S3 V12 2+2 • E‑Type S3 V12 Roadster • Mk X / Mk 10 3.8 • Mk X / Mk 10 4.2 • S‑Type 3.4, 3.8 • XJ12 S1 • XJ12 S3 • XJ6 S1 • XJ6 S2 / Daimler Sovereign S2 • XJ6 S3 • XJS • XJS ‑ Facelift
NO LONGER AVAILABLE
I have had success in the past welding the rivnut back on. As above the setscrew is nothing special so it would be the best choice if something has to go.
