#1 Slop on window-winding handle

Post by rfs1957 » Tue Apr 18, 2017 7:44 am

Can anyone suggest a remedy for this please ?

There is a good deal of slop (20° ?) between the square drive and the pinion (not pinion to quadrant gear, not handle to square) on this winder mechanism.

Repairable ? Looks all stamped shut.

Replaceable ? Are these easy to find second-hand ?

Rory, in searching for a similar problem I found MGB and Triumph window winders/regulators on fleabay with some seeming to have a similar drive for the winding mechanism. Didn't go as far as buying one, for I'm promised a working E Type one. No idea if they would fit, but it might be worth a punt.
(please don't blame me if I'm wrong though  )

Thanks for the suggestion - the MGB ones indeed look like they're similar and probably made by the same manufacturer, but the drive side for the handle is quite different.

and the same thing applies to the Triumph ones I've seen

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIUMPH-TR5-T ... SwnipWZXU1

The Jag one is a swine to separate as the steel claws are surprisingly tough to bend back, good steel and well past its elastic yield point, so 2/5 snapped off when straightening them to get the "cap" off to examine the contents.

The slop comes from a long-broken spring which looks like it gave some "give" to the action so the winder handle is not a hard object when you catch it - the square and the pinion are indeed not the same part. I've brazed them together, as no chance of finding that spring, machined a new spindle to reduce the floppiness, and then brazed a couple of opposing claws to hold the whole thing back together again.

Now it will rip off the first pocket or dress that gets caught on it, but it doesn't feel sloppy any more.

You can pry up the tabs on the winder gear and swap it for one from any contemporary saloon, preferably from a rear window mechanism. I did both windows on my 3.8 that way.
