#1 bonnet support frame S3 1971

Post by baganz.sven@web.de » Mon Jun 12, 2017 12:07 pm

Hi,

can someone tell me if the part I marked in the attached pic (some kind of flap) is necessary or not?

The pre owner of my car has cut it away (don't ask me why :banghead: )

Best regards

Sven

Sven,

it is for the apparatus that pulls the front license plate when lifting the hood/bonnet. So if you don't use that mechanism it´s of no further use. Most cars I´ve seen don`t utilize this.

My Series II has it. And it has a clevis pin in it. I now that because I've just painted the frame & put the clevis pin back in - can't remember what, if anything, it was attached to unfortunately.

Hello Sven,
The Bonnet Support frame shown in your attached picture is not that of an S3 E Type. Accordingly, you have either posted a picture of the wrong frame, or the title of your Thread is incorrect.

The lug you're referring to actuates a rod that is connected between it and a hinged number plate assembly. To add to Martin's comment, as the bonnet is swung to the full open position, the actuation rod makes the number plate swing up under the bonnet lower valance panel to avoid it hitting the ground. The actuation rod runs from the hinged number plate assembly, through an ob-round slot cut in the front of the lower valance panel, through a hole in the rear frame of the lower valance panel and then to the lug you have indicated in your picture.

Series 3 cars never had this feature, with the front number plate being located off centre, in front of the lower section of the grille. Where the earlier models have the ob-round slot for the number plate tilt actuation rod to pass through, the S3 has a wide air intake chin scoop.

Regards,

Bill
