Series 2 Cam Cover restoration
#1 Series 2 Cam Cover restoration
I am just doing some work on an XJ6 for my father and want to restore the cam covers. They are a bit powdered on the polished alloy and could do with a paint. Is there a company that does these or is there a technique to regain the machined finish to the aluminium after painting them? thanks

I had mine vapour blasted first. You can get the machined ribs looking good with a long flat block with gradually finer wet and dry followed by Autosol.

thank you Simon. That looks like the answer. I have seen some that look like brand new and you can see the milling marks in the ribs. Of course, it may be that they are slightly re milled. I guess you would not need much more than a thou or two to remove the paint and leave an as new finish. Thats why I wondered whether some company specialising in restoring them. I would imagine, it very tricky to avoid rounding off the edges of the ribs with a sanding block.
