#1 Lucas AB14 electronic ignition amplifier

Post by Yeldaw » Mon Feb 20, 2012 8:36 pm

Hi I am worried I may have burnt out my Lucas AB14 electronic ignition amplifier which is mounted on the top of the engine. My series 3 e type has had a reconditioned HE V 12 fitted. I am struggling to find an AB14 module. Is there an alternative amplifier that is a direct replacement for the AB14 unit.

Thanks Dave

This is EXACTLY what you need. In the black box of the AB14 are only 3 or 4 electronic parts. 1 condensator or 'Widerstand', 1 Zener-Diode, 1 "Chip". The Zener-Diode is a security for the "Chip" agaist high voltage. If the Zener-Diode is damaged , the Chip can be damagend by high voltage. This "chip" is fixed with two screws and 4 cables are fixed to it just with "push-shoes". If you mount this new "chip", the amp will work again. But there is a chance, that also the Zener-Diode is damaged. Therefore you must mount a new Zener-Diode. I am not a specialist for electronics and therefore I don't know, which special Zener-Diode you need for the AB14. The Zener-Diode is round and has a diameter of roundabout 12 mm. If the Zener-Diode is damaged, the AB14 can work, but the "chip" soon can be damaged again. Therfeore you must be shure, that the Zener-Diode is okay or you have to mount a new one.
In germany I (the red Jag is now fired by "Hella") and also a friend have renewed the "Chip" succesfully with this chip from Hella.
Open your AB14 and check the interior parts. The original chip has another branding. In the internet I have found, that it is the same, like the one in the link. This Chip from Hella has a number. Search in internet for this number. You should be able to find information about this and a supplier in the UK.
Maybe an electronic spezialist in the forum can give a better advise.
Excuse me poor english.
Wish the best for your repair Wolfgang Gatza

Here you can find this chip also from other producers or car producers.
Search also in the net by HEI 4pin module. This "amp" is used in XXmillions of cars. Maybe you can order it via amazone.

Good news, the car started first time this morning and the mechanic can't replicate the problem. I may start with trying to find a slightly cooler spot or some additional airflow for the amplifier. However if it does it again I will try replacing the internals as suggested. Thanks everyone for your help
Kind regards
Dave

This is a common problem with the XJ s3, probably the same unit in your car.
Search for "gm module" in the jag-lovers forum when the problem reappears.
Or put one in your glove compartment and don?t get stranded when it breaks down completely :)
I think it cost me ?15 to fix.

I think that is good advice to get a spare chip in the glove box. I have managed to find a Lucas DAB125 chip which I think is the same part
see link here for all the compatable manufacturer part numbers

Dave will learn, that because of Murphy's law, his chip will die forever at the point, which is farest away from home.

The AB 14 and especially Zeners rely on a good heat sink to take away the heat energy when the semiconductors 'clip' the excess electrical energy and become conductors. The AB14 amp is always mounted to the comparatively cool inlet manifold and also needs a good earth to function. It is a totally different system constant energy system to the OPUS design and incompatible with OPUS or ReOPUS dizzies.

I would not remount it anywhere else, it works fine for long durations where Jaguar fitted it. I carry a spare Del o GM module as it is basically the same part for HE (and converted OPUS) V12s as for the Series 3 XJ system which I use on my blue OTS.

Sounds like the best advice is to replace the chip with the new one and keep a spare as back up. I will look to do this once it arrives.

Just joined and saw your POST from 2012 but thought maybe others would look up Lucas AB14 Electronic Ignition Amplifier. You can have them rebuilt for $75.00 by:
