The dry weight of the engine and all ancillaries is about 600 lbs, but by the time you have removed starter motor, alternator ,carburetters, exhaust etc you are down to about 480 - 500 lbs . A 227kg / 500 lbs stand with the single leg pointing forwards is just adequate, but if you mount the engine longways from one it is best to provide some support at the front end of the engine when moving it around. I have tried to use the heavier duty Machine mart type with two legs going forward, but found that these were difficult to load using most engine cranes, because the legs of the crane fouled the legs of the stand . Whatever you use, make sure you use high tensile bolts to attach the block to the stand

Steve et al : I cannot remember whether I have ever had mine on the stand with the head on, although i do not think there is any problem of clearance which would prevent it. What is perhaps not apparent from the pics is that the rear of the engine has a standoff from the frame of the stand by something like 4 inches, so that even with the head on the engine should be capable of being turned through 360 degrees if needed. Perhaps I can also give some further advice
1. It is best to fit the swivelling part of the stand to the engine before lifting the block up to the stand itself
2.The overall height of the XK engine ( not to mention also its length ) means that it is safer to have the crane restraining the top-heavy nature of the engine when e.g. turning it from head upwards to crankcase upwards - on one of the pics you can see the short chains I used for this to prevent a sudden uncontrollled swing downwards. It reduces the risk of breakage of the fastening bolts also, and when going in the opposite direct i.e. top upwards it reduces the physical effort needed
3. When wheeling the assembly around , particularly with the engine top upwards, instability is much reduced again by a prop under the front of the engine ( I used wood ) and its weight partly supported by the crane to reduce the possibility of accident

I recently bought a very nice engine stand on eBay from a fellow calling himself blindstickinsect. Item no. 142345388985. £38 inc carriage. Rated @ 1,250 lb. I am getting my block & crank back from Formhalls this week so will be using it for the first time. It looks very well made though & terrific value.

I bought a 1250 lb. capacity engine stand which is overkill, but all of that weight cantilevered out in space made me nervous. To answer the question as to whether the engine can be rotated with the head on, I suppose that it depends on the design of your engine stand, but mine rotated with the head on, no problem. The head does add weight to the top of the block so it required a little more effort to rotate with the head than without.
Here's a photo of the stand that I got from Summit Racing

And a shot of the engine on the stand with the head

And from the intake side
