Gearbox..To Overhaul or not Overhaul?

Evening all,
I've bought a MKII Gearbox with the Laycock Overdrive. I bought it from a Jag breaker that came recommended by a number on this forum, but I think I need to get it at least looked at at worst completely overhauled.
On the one hand there's the argument that getting a complete overhaul of the box may well require parts to be replaced. I've read a number of threads where the quality of replacement parts has been identified as problem so this route maybe not such a good idea.
On the other hand putting a gearbox in that is an unknown quantity is also not such a good idea. I plan to have "overdrive repair services" take a look at the overdrive itself.
Be interested to hear what others have done i this situation.

Shame you cant test it.

In my experience of this gearbox, it would be worth changing the oil seals, o rings and gaskets anyway. They go off with age. The rest of it doesn't as long as it id coated with oil.

Any competent manual gearbox rebuilder will be able to assess most of it with the top off.

It takes 1 minute to get the top off.

If they then wish to disassemble and reassemble the layshaft/main-shaft its no big deal.

No great expense. So why dont you do that? I reckon, if you do that, you will have a 90% chance of success.

Rebuild the whole thing while it's out of the car.

Hi Kevin......as already said ideally rebuild it.....but check out what new parts are going to be used, as you have read some replacement parts are poor quality.....have a chat with Angus one of the forum moderators

speak to Ken at Klassic transmissions. He is well known for his work and only uses 9has access to) good quality parts.
