I just bought a set of head studs from SNGB. Just a heads up - I had to run a die down all of the threads, as they were tight where they had been zinc(?) plated. I reckon anybody trying to torque the head down without cleaning up the threads first will run into problems with the stiffness of the threads soaking up much of the torque rather than stretching the studs.
There wasn't much consistency between the studs - or even between one end of a stud and the other; some were almost ok, some were very tight.
This is not intended as a criticism of SNGB's head studs - they are fine provided you take this precaution.

Did the special stud with the larger diameter at its base fit OK....mine didn't and I ended up reusing my old one....it would neither fit snugly into the recess in the block nor would it fit into the head

I have already mentioned this to Julian...am waiting for a response....wondered if I was unlucky....although another forum memeber had the same experience about a year or so ago

Ha! You've got me! The 'special' stud actually has a much nicer finish than the rest. It looks for all the world like bright shiny cadmium, as opposed to the dull coarse galvanised finish on the others that looks like those coach bolts you get in hardware stores.
Anyway, I just wound it in without checking to see if it would fit the head. I think it's gone into the block ok, but now that you mention it, it might just be sitting on top. I will check it fits both ends.
You might just have saved me a lot of work if the head won't go over the bulge! I'll report back shortly.

Perfect snug fit in both. Phew!
