#1 3.8 FHC - Dunlop brake master cylinder pipe fittings

Hi,
I have the original 5/8 Dunlop brake master cylinders, now re-sleeved in s/s and fully overhauled. The Automec brake pipe kit didn't include the pipes that run between the master cylinders to the reservoir flexi-pipes. I don't want to pay £40 for a made up pair from the usual suppliers, as I know I can get a pair made up a lot cheaper elsewhere (as long as I don't mention that they are for an E-Type!).

My questions:
1. What spec of flaring & fittings do I quote for the m/c ends of the cunifer pipe? These threaded female bores in the m/c are larger than the bores for the output bores to the unions.
2. Is the pipe (cunifer in this case) 3/16" diameter?
3. How would I describe the flex-hose end fitting?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Can't answer all your questions but the pipe to the reservoirs is a larger diameter bore than the pipes from the m/c to the calipers. Mine are copper. The flexible pipes are epdm I think and are specifically suitable for brake fluid. Available from many car spares places by the foot. Do not use fuel hose as it is not brake fluid tight and will sweat brake fluid...

Richard,
diameter is 1/4,
you need to measure m/c bore depht (=min. thread lenght of fitting)
hose -end of pipe has no fitting (push fit with hose clip)

Automec lists fittings on their homepage

Thanks chaps. I’ve worked out that the fittings are 7/16” for the reservoir outlets as opposed to the 3/8” for the union outlets. Now that you have filled in the pipe diameter info I am good to go. :salute:

7/16" & 3/8" are huge pipe sizes for a car application, unless you are talking about the spanner size?

My automec kit had all of the pipes included, except the flexy ones.

Hi Stuart

Yes, spanner sizes. I was surprised that the pipes were’nt included in my kit - I checked with SNG who confirmed it. Maybe I should have bought direct from Automec.

I am going to make all the pipes myself,
just searching for a list of pipe diameter, nuts (male and female), couplings, bleeder sizes and type are required?
I need to do 3.8 and 4.2 cars.

Pipes are copper or stainless steel
Nuts are galvanized or copper

As tools I would think of
Sykes Pickavant Automatic Brake Flaring Tool Master Kit right?

Any hints are welcome

Thanks

Maikel
