#1 Thermostat (again)

Post by mystery type » Thu Feb 02, 2017 1:26 pm

I am about to fit a new header tank as mine has rusted through, and whilst I'm doing this job I want to fit a thermostat.
After reading the many topics on this I am confused on which thermostat to purchase.
I have a series 1, 4.2 engine. can anyone point me to the correct part.
I am buying the tank from barratts but cant seem to see a thermostat listed under cooling

The bypass hole is 12 mm from the face.

If you look at the bottom of the page you will see the Forum has automagically searched and found relevant posts on your requirements. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8478

If you buy from SNGB these are the correct part numbers:

Alternatively Wat-Jag can supply a sleeved thermostat.

Thanks David,
I got confused as I had read so many conflicting posts, such as the one below where someone had suggested
that same thermostat from sng barratt, but you said that wouldn't work.
anyway I will purchase that so many thanks.

Actually Steve that SNGB will not work because the sleeve is positioned just below the upper plate of the thermostat whereas the original version has the sleeve is positioned 1 inch lower. Hence I did not recommend it - it has a * after the part number meaning it is not to original specification:

I also am confused with all these specs, models, OEM or repros.
I have an S1 3.8 and I intend to replace my thermostat while doing restoration works on my cooling system.
I have not yet opened the thermostat housng but it looks "standard" for the 3.8 engine.

When I look at what SNGB offers there are three different thermostat models for my car:
- C3731/1* which is presented as a repro 70-75°C;
- C27650 whisch is sold as "standard" 74°C; and
- C27650 which is the OEM 74°C.
Funnily, the OEM is the cheapest, then comes the standard and the most expensive is the repro!

I am tempted to purchase the OEM of course but can anyone confirm that it's the right one as all the models presented have a different look.

Please advise

Serge, have you been facing heating issues or suspecting that your thermostat is not working properly?
The one I have fitted on the 3.8 to replace the wrong one found during resto is the waxstat C3731.
Car is not yet on the road, but static tests in the courtyard with IR gun lead to believe that system is working properly.

Tank you for the useful comments.
Steve, I had read the thread you linked but it is quite complex to understand what is what at the end...
I will read it again.
Ralph, thx for the advice and good idea making IR tests. Who knows, maybe my thermostat is still good ;)
