Can anyone tell me where you place a castor gauge to measure the angle ( S1 E type ) please? The workshop manual is silent on this

Depends which tool you are using but ideally it will fix to the wheel hub with the spinner removed. Bear in mind you will need to move the wheels left and right 20 degrees so a turntable (or some care) is required. Other option is to do it with the wheels off the car but that means loading the suspension. Here are the instructions for the Seeley tool which may help:

Christopher,

for castor I found it easier to take it to an alignment shop - once you have the measurement for each side mark the fulcrum shaft then each full rotation of the shaft changes the castor by 0.4 deg.

I have some photos of mine when I done it in my garage. I used the correct Dunlop gauges with the turntables.
I don't know how to post photos so can't show you.
