#1 Cylinder Head Studs - where from ?

Am tempted to replace the 13 x C2269 and 1 x C2270 head-studs (which is bigger at the base as it the dowelling one, never knew that) as 1. some PO idiot has used a mole-wrench instead of locked-nuts and 2. the lower footings appear to go into the water jacket (? haven't got the block to check ?) as they are nastily corroded at the tips.

Is this frequent ?
I had idly thought of ARP but perhaps not at that price
https://www.terrysjag.com/product/HSKE38TJP.html
when they apparently don't address the dowelling issue, implying they are 14 x all the same
or here for £225 + VAT
http://www.rob-beere-racing.co.uk/engine.html
but SNGB are charging £15 each inc VAT for the 13 standard ones, and less - £9.96 ?! for the special one.
Then I see that David Manners has a set for £66 inc VAT ? Confirmed by return of email.
Has anyone bought a set of these recently ?
I usually buy blind from SNGB ; I used to be confused, now I'm not so sure.

I bought head studs from Manners recently for all the reasons hinted at in your post Rory. They were for a S3 rather than an S1 but I suspect they come from the same source. Perfectly fine, and FWIW Rob Beere told me he thought anything better was unnecessary for regular road use.
Cheers,

I should buy the David Manners set, if you think it's really necessary ( I am not quite sure what you mean by corrosion at the tips - it is erosion of the thickness of the shaft that is the serious problem on the later 4.2 ones which go to the base of the water jackets ) . These are not particularly stressed parts, as shown by the 54 lb-ft torque setting)

Yes, Christopher , the picture doesn't show it but indeed there is no corrosion on the shanks as it were. However the tips look really mangy, with the first couple of threads completely eaten away on a couple, which offends my sensibilites when everything else looks so marvellous.
Do they indeed sit in the cooling system, I wonder ? Haven't got the block to check any more, on its way to Chesman.
I'd like to justify spending £66 on the grounds that the nicks and rips caused by the Mole-wrench monkeys might be stress-raisers, but - as you say - they're not exactly working very hard.
I'll probably change them but just not admit to it.

Look up XRN engineering, they source most of the engine components supplied by the major classic jag suppliers and are therefore generally cheaper for the same item.

Rory, I'm sure Christopher can confirm his comments about being in the coolant only apples to the later 4.2 engines, not sure if some S1.5 would have them, certainly my S2 has the longer studs which go through the coolant space. I'm confident in saying your 3.8 has the shorter studs and are not in the coolant.

Rory, Geoff et al : yes indeed, it is only the later 4.2 ( the ones with 5 core plugs on the exhaust side ) where the studs are about a foot long and go through the coolant . Some that I have removed were down to about 2/3 diameter ! However, I do wonder whether Rory's corroded tips are on the short studs on the 3.8 some of which seal off the water jacket from the top IIRC ( a long time since I've had a 3.4 or 3.8 apart )
