Fuel level warning lamp

Does anyone know how much fuel has to be in the petrol tank before the warning lamp goes out?

In my car it's between 2 1/2 and 3 gallons (UK).

I've put 2 gallons in so far without extinguishing the warning light, but wanted to check that was OK before much more went in.

My low fuel warning lamp started indicating low fuel when there was plenty of fuel in the tank. I took the unit off the tank, and cleaned the contacts using metal polish. It has worked properly since.
