Took mine off because it was leaking, as far as I can tell, from behind the pulley. Inside, the impeller and everything looks in good condition and it spins smoothly. In fact the whole pump looks like it was replaced/reconditioned when the car was restored 10 years ago. I had no cooling issues.
So, it probably just needs new seals.
Can anyone advise which options (repair/replace/recondition) have worked or otherwise? I really don't want to take the pump off again. Recommendations on suppliers of repair parts, reconditioning etc welcome.

sometimes it stops leaking after a longer spin. As far as I can remember, the pump has to come off for any repair, at least on the 3.8. I rebuilt mine with a repair kit many years ago and it is still ok.
As long as as it leaks only slightly I'd try the drive-it-method,

The leak required a 100-200ml top up every 100 miles or so and had progressed to leaving a damp area on the garage floor.

After much struggling the pump is now off so it's just a question of the best route to a lasting repair.

I've read tales of repair kits that don't fit and repro pumps that don't last, hence my question.

Can you remember where you bought your overhaul kit?

Unfortunately there's no follow up to reveal weather the new seals worked. The service manual is straightforward but my challenge is finding out which parts/services available in 2018 will give a lasting result.

It's the challenge we all face.

sorry, cant remember where I bought the repair kit -too long ago; today I would also tend to buy a good quality new one.

As an update to my posts in the link Steve mentions above, my rebuild kit purchased from a well known large supplier was of very poor quality. It was another of those parts I wish I'd never wasted time, money and effort fitting only for it to fail after mere minutes.
The machining of the parts was quite frankly atrocious.

In the end I bought a new one ( complete pump) from M&C Wilkinson.

My 340 pump repair (same as the 3.8) does not leak and does not cause overheating which I was concerned about.
The kits are not original parts, but as a kit they do work, even though there are no instructions and they do not go together exactly as described in the service manual.

I am led to believe that the new pumps are not all we would wish for ether, as they do not look exactly like the originals (although looking at the SNG site they look OK to me)and quite likely contain the kit parts, as the original seals are no longer available.
