#1 Triple SU rebuild

Post by Robbiee » Sun Aug 19, 2018 1:31 pm

Dear All
Just having fun stripping and cleaning my S1 SU carbs
Couple of things
1. Slow run valves: when I unscrewed them I found they had no brass washer or rubber washer fitted as described in the SU blurb. Are these essential? I’m thinking they probably are?
2. The jag parts handbook lists a large washer that sits at the base of the dashpot spring...I didn’t have these ...Again are they important and available?
3. The Centre carb choke mechanism has a double holed lever but mine is broken...it looks like there’s a pin you have to drive out to release it from the spindle to then be able to replace it..had anyone done this?
4. How much play is allowed in the butterfly valve spindle before resleeving..I have s minute amount only
Thanks
Robbie

All the parts are available from Burlen Fuel systems who remanufacture all the parts and will sell you a whole set of carbs for many beer tokens....get a list of bits you need and call them. They are helpful on the phone. Their website is www.burlen.co.uk

If you want original you can either trawl eBay etc or visit the the spares day in Stoneleigh in October where you might be able to pick up an original carb....pot luck.

I have just finished refurbing my SU’s, there should be a cone shaped brass washer between spring and O ring on the slow run valve. I had no large washer at the base of the dash pot spring and it’s not listed on Bulens parts list so I assumed it wasn’t required, I also had a small amount of spindle bush play, I replaced the Teflon bushes for new type bushes unfortunately you will have to machine the carb body’s for the replacement bushes, the small pin that holds the choke lever is tapered so make shure you drive it out the correct way. here’s a couple of pics of mine

Thank you both
I’ll check the SU website
There seems to be some debate over throttle spindle bushings..cork type, rubber or Teflon
I might give David Lonsdale a call

1. Yes. Come in the refurb kit
2. Not seen these myself
braze a bit of material on the end and redrill the hole
If you have any discernible play just get all 3 of them rebushed.

Thanks
Can anyone give any guidance as to the date stamp codes on the top of the flange
ie X1 or X4
I guess it’s a code for year/month?
Is there a table somewhere to assist with this?
