Hi all, I am almost at a point where I need to remove engine/gearbox and IRS in readiness to have the tub media blasted, I Shall have the gearbox & IRS overhauled, engine was rebuilt some 25 plus years ago and from what I can make out it’s had new Cams, valves, chains, rebore and pistons, question is after all this time without the engine been run should this now have a precautionary strip down?

Angus had my engine rebuilt at CMES in Bracknell and I've been very happy with it, but if you're looking for somewhere closer to home there is a firm not far from you called Scholar Engines, just off the A140 at Mendlesham. They have been going a long time and specialise in various racing engines but they do have experience of XK engines and have rebuilt other classic engines. I know of at least one person who had his E type engine rebuilt there and is happy with it. I called in to see them a while back about rebuilding my Healey engine but haven't got round to it yet so can't recommend them from personal experience.

Tom Barclay in Slough was trained by Rob Beere (who did my engine to a superb standard). Rob tells me that Tom is doing the engines for Jaguar Classics. So although I've no direct experience, he comes with v good credentials.

Many thanks for all your replies, I hope as it’s just a basic stripdown replacement of crank seals and gaskets it won’t to much money, I’ll let you all know how I get on.

Mines at Winspeed at the moment following a failed oil ring on piston 3.....

Rebore, new pistons and a total bottom end rebuild coming in at £10k

Paul, do Winspeed do the engineering themselves? If not, who do they send it to?

Ouch that’s expensive does that include removal and refit or is it just the rebuild?

Winspeed do it in house (chris window is the engine genius) and that cost includes taking the engine out and putting it back in, new clutch etc.....

Ditto, CMES in Bracknell did my rebuild and I am very pleased with the result, even had a guided tour of the workshop before committing to the project

I'd be cautious stating its all done in house... I know most people contract to Chesman Engineering - which almost all top engine builders do too..
