I was looking at the gauges of my E type and they’re quite misty and could do with a thorough clean.

While trying to take the speedo out from underneath (undoing the thumb screws and speedo drive cable etc) this fell out and I don’t know where it goes!

I had a few questions:

Does anyone know where it goes?

Also - does anyone know which speedo bulb (what wire colour) fixes to which light? (Fuel, headlamps etc).

What do the thumbscrews fasten to?

thanks everyone!

Hi There,

That is one of the two clamps holding the speedo to the back of the dash panel. There’s one on each side of the dial.

If you want to clean the unit properly, you will need to remove the glass. The glass can be removed once you pry open the tabs that hold the bezel on. Whatever you do, don’t try and use compressed air to blow inside the unit to clear the glass - all you’ll do is blow a load of dust from the back of the unit onto the inside of the glass!

Oh, and once you’ve got it all apart, you will probably need a new rubber sealing ring between the bezel and glass. Do a search as it’s been discussed a few times before.

Cheers

The bracket (arrowed) retains the gauge against the dash with a knurled nut. There is one on each side. The other part is the remote control for the mileage recorder.

The wiring colours are shown in the wiring diagram in the knowledge base.
