Gearbox removal in 35 mins

I was at a loose end today so I was looking through the archives on the JEC forum, this chap has modified his car to allow for the gearbox to be removed independently of the engine. Has anyone else done/seen this?

This is as bad than the "cowboy" method of chopping up the tunnel to allow gearbox removal through the cockpit. The cross member is primary structure and contributes the chassis's rigidity.

Here in the states, I've seen a lot of E-Types suffer from similar indignities, usually to re-lump them with domestic iron, and the one thing most of these modifications have in common is a lack of understanding regarding structures. The disclaimer at the article's end illustrates that the editors weren't terribly confident about this either.

Thanks chaps, I wasn't considering it myself, my 'box has just been swapped out conventionally, I just hadn't heard of this approach before and wondered how common it was.

Can only speak for Series 3, long wheel base of course, but dropping gearbox is done without disturbing engine. Sorry can't speak for short wheel-base cars. On the Series 3....yup, certainly be done in less then an hour with a lift, and an extra set of experienced hands.
