What am I missing? They cannot of designed this on purpose?

I was stripping down an IRS this afternoon. On both calipers, one or both of the bolts would unwind until it hit the diff casing. Unfortunately, the thread was still in the mounting flange. So the caliper could not be removed.

I had to resort to undoing the caliper mounting flange with the caliper and disc still attached. Of course it was all nastily seized, requiring oxy and took ages.

In the end I tapped the flange away from the diff allowing just enough clearance for the caliper bolts to be withdrawn.

I did notice thin washer shims fall out that were mounted between caliper and flange.

Never seen them before and they definitely added to my woes.

Is this normal?

Its along time since I worked on this but I don't remember the bolts being to longer in order to remove the caliper. So you could investigate if they are the orig/correct length. The calipers are shimmed to center them on the disc. Unless they are way off most people don't refit them.
