Air filter - again...

Could not resist and acquired this which was on a US import and the owner returning to original set up:










It is clearly a homebrew made of stainless steel, well done with nice welding all around.
Did read the very detailed posts conc the original plenum and filter canister performance, but nevertheless very tempted to fit and test.
So my lack of experience brings forward my question as to which filtering element to fit inside? Foam cut to dimension and oiled and stored inside, an external sock, where to procure? Or a paper element?
Dimensions look to be: 44cm x 13cm x 7cm.

Just beautiful !! Great find !! I would go the way of the wrap around foam....several companies will make you one, if you give them the dimensions..They might have something in stock. Might even ask previous owner what he did. Easy to clean. You will notice a slight bump in performance, and the sound from the carbs with a less restrictive filter system will be glorious !! Bravo !

Thanks JC, the previous owner bought the car as a US import from a dealer, he has no info or contact with previous owner. The filter box was empty when he got the car, he could not give me any hint.
Initially I thought I could use an S3 filter element, but these look to be a bit smaller with only about 33cm long. Maybe I should take 2 then cut and reassemble to fit.
Did you notice the fuel filter bowl location? Also very interesting.

No idea why anyone would have fitted the fuel filter there as it would be difficult to examine and even harder to remove/change!

Mr.Jones is correct....ITG can set you up. As for the fuel filter, yes...very strange place. I would remove, and if it were me, I would mount some place visible, or at least in the trunk, as I did, where it can be examined without to much fuss.. Fabricate a small piece of any metal, and simply cover the whole once you remove the bowl. Easy enough.

I believe mounting the bowl in a position away from that kind of heat would be prudent also !

Looks like an XK150 ‘S’ air box, particularly given the fuel bowl mount position in which case there are several off the shelf standard and performance elements available.

I will first check fitment on my car and clearance, and if ok for testing and ordering the appropriate filter.

If it is in fact an XK150 airbox it will fit the engine, but not the car (E-type). The element area will foul the engine frame. Been there, done that, bought (and returned) the airbox.

Steve, the one I have is a home brew which came out of an E.
I will make a trial fit on my car coming week-end and report, it should look like this (Brian's car on JL):

I see the one pictured has no apparent length to the "trumpet" tubes. The one you have has tubes similar in length to the standard E. I would think that when you try to fit yours, it will foul the mudguard, if not the engine frame also. Note how the original E set up has the fiberglass airbox/adaptor "swept back" to clear the mudguard.

Steve you are absolutely right: it fouls strongly the mudguard .
I have contacted the fellow who sold it to me and he admitted that the mudguard had been "adapted" (read cut) to accomodate.
Any XK150 fellows around?
