... Final bits to fit: were do these go ?

I think the long ones are torsion bar shields ? I even have the original rough cloth bands somewhere which were glued on the back side... a bit like seat belt stuff.









The lowest picture shows the 7 large and 3 small alloy clamps I have left.

What bolt size do I need for them ? I have no small bolts left, so I need another 15 or so of that specific size.

Hi Carsten,
You need 1/4 UNF x 5/8
Dowload the SC part catalogue there is nearly all the nuts and bolt used on an E Type.

Seems the inspection plate changed over the years, the SNG drawing shows a different version.

But lucky me, all parts are there, and original. I‘ll brush them with a wire brush, clean and re-paint in black.

That’s because you are looking at a diagram for a different car.

If you want to identify accurately 2+2 parts you should look in your 2+2 parts book. The undershields are different because of the lower LWB floors.

There is some good news though: you can enjoy a lot of legitimate hammer time making those panels smooth and straight again.

It’s great to hear you are almost finished and will be able to enjoy the E-type on the road at last with Suzanne and Felix (hoffentlich). I will always smile at the leitmotif of your restoration, which sounds like an epic Hollywood film: “The hammer and the book.”

Very true. But imagine owning Jim's artwork and lyrics for the song "J38 in 2+2 time" and the Bild free Doors poster shows 'J30''..... wrong number but you don't expect Egon Muller at Nordsee.

Maybe it is a silly question, but - does the lower L part of the torsion bar shields face outwards ?

Seen from the drivers seat, it would be that : _I Engine sump here I_ ?

This would mean the torsion bars are in fact free - and the frame is shielded of from the torsion bars (or did the think stones come from the wheels but not from below ? Why not I_ _ I ?

If you look at the one long original TBS above, it must be the RH part. Look at the grime, you can see the imprint of the cloth. And this presses against the lower frame, and the cutout must be at the front. So this is the RH part. The L is then facing outwards.

I am missing the LH rear part. And the LH under battery part.

The one with the round 2 inch cutout goes in front of the air intake trumpets according to the Chris Vine resto page.

Would you fit a long LH part (I have fitted standard downpipes, not the 2+2 siamesed system) ?

And finally, I would love to be able to identify this item :








Maybe it is the lower „radiator protection shield“ ?

That looks like the bit that fits between the radiator and the bonnet pivot tube, albeit slightly mangled.

Oh I have a wide assortment of hammers for this purpose.... ;-)

Then, the rear LH TBS is no longer available at SNG. Does anyone have an idea where to find it ?

I thought about buying the long FHC, non 2+2- Version, because I have a standard exhaust- it should fit. If not, I can still cut so it would be "as the shortened version".

My brackets and alloy plates are all off the car whilst I restore the front end awaiting the engine back.

I have a large collection of photographs of the bracket positioning for the torsion bar protection plates plus the ‘floors’ too.

Also loads of notes on where each bracket goes.

Happy to prepare a portfolio of photos and accompanying notes if it helps.

Fitted shiny stainless steel ones on my series 3 25 years ago & they look as good as new.

Wasted all that time scrubbing rust, repainting etc before it dawned on me to fit everlasting replacements!
