Hi all
E type series 1 2+2
I’m replacing the electrical oil pressure gauge with the capillary type

What do I do with the wires which connect to the current gauge ( lamp obviously stays)

Can they simply be made safe or do I need to do something different

Just put some heat-shrink tubing over the ends, to cover the metal connectors, and stow them safely. I wouldn't cut them off, in the event some future owner of your E-Type decides to refit the electrical gauge.

I have a '64 and have been thinking of doing the same gauge replacement. Which gauge did you go with? I sourced a Smiths one, but haven't done the change over yet.

Problems have been reported with the "new" mechanical "Smiths" 0-100psi gauges sold by the usual suppliers. I returned the unreliable unit I had purchased and found a used 0-60 mechanical gauge from a Lotus Europa. It looks identical to the original electric item after exchanging the chrome bezel for the black one.

I would be interested to know where you located a 60psi mechanical gauge. I've been seeking one for a while. I've fitted the commonly available 100psi unit but a 60psi gauge would improve the appearance somewhat.

The one I had would stop at about 20 psi until pressure in the engine built to 40 or 50, and then it would jump to maybe 30. I knew it was wrong because I had previously attached a spare mechanical Stewart Warner gauge directly at the oil port on the filter block when I was trouble shooting problems with the electric unit and sender. All quite disconcerting during the first start of a newly rebuilt engine. After I removed the 0-100 indicator I plumbed it to my air compressor and steadily increased the pressure to 80. It never showed more than about 30. The vendor took it back and made a refund. I found the Europa gauge on Ebay (U.S.). It typically pegs on a cold engine start and then settles in at about 50 psi at cruise when the oil warms. It's very reassuring watching the actual pressure move around without the lag in the electrical unit.

I have the 0-100 one from SNG, works perfectly and never had any problems. Checked against a pro unit and readings identical at all revs. Eric obviously had a duff one.
