#1 Removing rear wheel bearings

Does anyone have details of a bearing puller that can be used to remove the inner race of the outer wheel bearings from the rear hubs? As the bearing sits in a recess created by the water thrower, my conventional puller that grips beneath the race won’t fit. When I last did my wheel bearings, I cut the cage and removed it so I could grip on the inner lip of the race. This time I’d like to get the bearing off in a reusable condition as they’re nearly new, and I’m just changing the hubs.

Hi Tom,
On the seat of the outer wheel bearing ( Timken 18590-18520), there is two notches.
Clean the inside hub very closely and you'll see what I mean.
You can easily remove the wheel with a axle and a hammer.
You work from inside to outside.
If you can, warm the Aluminium hub to make the iron wheel more free.
You have the same notches on the seat of the inner bearing ( Timken 18590 - 18520 ).
Hope it's help.

Hi Mitch,

It’s removing the bearings from the hub (the splined bit), not the carrier, that I need to do. It seems difficult with my cheap hub puller set to get anything behind the outer wheel bearing. I have one of those pullers with the two semicircular segments that tighten together, but that can’t be used to get behind the bearing as the water thrower sits further out than the joint between bearing and hub. Here’s a photo of the bearing when I did it last time before I cut the roller cage off. You can see where I’ve started to cut the cage. This time I’d like to remove the bearing intact if possible.

Good idea, I could remove the water thrower. I have one of those slyles of pullers already.

Presumably there is a type of puller that works though, without either destroying the bearing, or removing the water thrower, which isn’t really designed to be removed. The manual just says “use a suitable puller”.

Just use a sharp cold chisel and a hammer and go gently.
