#1 Brake Vapour Lock

Post by Whitact » Wed Jun 19, 2019 11:01 am

On a recent run up from Cadiz through Spain & Portugal in my S3 OTS I experienced repeated episodes of vapour lock in the brakes. Car was fully loaded with luggage, tools and spares and ambient temperatures were 30 deg plus. The route included several significant climbs and descent; time controls on the event precluded hanging around. On every significant descent the brake pedal would start to go long after a few miles and would then take quite a while to return to normal. Brakes are standard with EBC Red Stuff pads at the front and Mintex on the back. New DOT 4 fluid just before the trip. Five speed gearbox. Has anyone else experienced this or got any good advice on the best way to prevent it?
Not looking to re-open a debate on glycol vs silicone fluid.
Cheers

Hi Adrian... Vapor lock is just down to brake fluid and moisture that is in it and heat generated....could it be that you still have moisture in the system after you done a fluid change?......A complete flush through would be the first step....Steve

Hi Adrian,
Are the rear brake air scoops fitted and if so have they been squashed by someone lifting the car on them?

Thanks for the responses guys.
Rear brake air scoops are fitted and in pretty good shape. New brake fluid was flushed through the whole system just before my trip.
