Under bonnet valance and mudshield seals

Hi,
I’ve just fitted the stone and mud guards along with the rubber seals/strips.
On the left handed side, where should the shorter bonnet valance rubber seal ‘mate’ with the mudshield rubber?
Mine wants to squeeze down the forward face of the mudshield rubber seal as below:



However, this has made the bonnet difficult to shut and the gap between rear bonnet edge and bulkhead has increased.
I have trimmed the valance seal down 5mm which has helped the closing, but the bulkhead gap is still too wide.

Should the valance seal mate on the forward edge of the mudshield seal, or on to the riveted seal strip?
