#1 Vac port for distributor: where on the carbs is it ?

Post by Durango2k » Thu Oct 13, 2016 4:55 am

Hi guys,

I may be blind, but I cannot find the vaccuum connector on the carbs, to connect the distributor hose to.

Where is it ? Is it one of the (thicker) copper pipes ? I have thicker and thinner pipes on my (original) carb set. It may fit to the thicker ones, diameter-wise.

Thx !

Carsten,

On the HD carbs there is a flat area on the upper rear part of the body casting, about 20x30mm, just above where the butterfly is. One of your carbs should have a white metal cast bit about 5mm thick with a brass pipe or fitting sticking up. This is where the distributor vacuum connects to the carb end.

See page c.3 of the 3.8 E shop manual, fig 1, part 4.

This is the same for HD6 and HD8 carbs. Some carb bodies are not drilled, some are drilled and blanked off with a plate, and some have a plate with a vacuum takeoff, either a plain brass tube, or a threaded union nut fitting.

Andrew

I have one very thin copper pipe on the front carb, it's slightly bent.

This may be it- and someone doodled around with a rubber hose.

I'll follow this trace first.

Thanks !

Okay, found it. It is on the front carb on top. They even stamped "IGN" into the base plate !

Now, I have a 3 mm copper pipe, and a 5-6mm alloy port on the dissi.

How to match them - was there a special short rubber adapter from 3 to 5 mm, or would I just get 5 cm of 3mm tube and squeeze it over the 5m ?

Hi Carsten,

Beware that the hole which is under the small flat part where you fit the copper pipe is free.
