Engine and gearbox almost out of the car (going out the bottom) but a few questions on the last pieces - do I need to drain the oil from the engine before I remove the oil filter housing...? I'm under the impression that the oil level will be above the filter and pour out the block? And then on the clutch slave - is there a way to avoid having to bleed the clutch later by not breaking the line (i.e. removing the slave from the gearbox)? Otherwise where is the best place to break the clutch line? The manual seems to infer the connection on the bulkhead. Car is a 3.8 FHC by the way.

If the engine will remain level during removal, you shouldn't have to drain the oil first, but I'd do it anyway. It's the perfect time for an oil change.

You can remove the clutch slave without having to bleed the system. Just tie it off to something out of the way during engine removal.

Previous post is correct, you can take off the oil filter without first draining the sump. Best place to break the clutch circuit is to disconnect the feed pipe to the slave cylinder. You need to unbolt the flexible to copper union just above to allow you to move it but that’s just a single bolt on the bracket.

and if you want you can leave the oil in when you lift the engine out from the top at the steep angle required.
