#1 Best manual 5-speed for the S3 V12

Post by pmansson » Mon Sep 27, 2010 8:37 pm

Most of the earlier discussions relate to the 6 cyl cars.
What is the current best option for the S3, esp with a stronger engine ??

Speak to Harry at E-Type UK or send him a PM (harryetype) as he has a lot of experience with the V12's.

Of all the cars I have driven and own , the Getrag has the nicest gearchange. We have one with a 456 Bhp engine on webers and it has no problem coping with the power and torque !

That?s the Getrag I have on several of my BMW coupes from the early 70s. OD on fifth. I also have the CR version on some cars.
I have the OD version on my 140 OTS. Yes, I know they are strong, but also quite rough.
Thanks anyway.

Getrag has to be the worst gearbox for any E-Type - great on a tractor but lousy on a sports car!

It depends where you are coming from David, if as me you converted two vehicles from Moss Boxes to the Getrag, then the Getrag appeared to be very slick compared to the moss boxes. However that was in the early 1990's and now I have transitioned to the T5 on two of my cars and I agree the T5 is a very good box with much better ratio's. However one car my MKII, I have converted back to the Jaguar all synchro 4 speed with O/D and this is a lovely box also, especially as I completely rebuilt it with a close ratio gear set
Kind Regards John
