Happy New Year members.
Re fitting my 4.2 today.
I got a bit stumped by the selection of gaskets that came with a bottom end kit.
None of them seem quite right.
Any one got any suggestions? Maybe I just need to get the correct pattern gasket!
Maybe the filter housing is XJ6 or something?

Hi James....numerous gaskets available and never looks like one will fit..best thing is to work out what each section of your houseing is for and work out what the ports on the block are... then use a gasket to suite...if that makes sense......better than someone just saying use the middle one and it not being correct..just to add looking at your photo do you have a balance valve fitted....not uncommon for them to fall out.. whats the silver looking disc in top right housing section..Steve

The pattern of the gasket should exactly match the pattern of the metal.
Check with XK’s Unlimited...they carry most variations of the gasket.

Hi James,
I might be wrong but the filter housing in your picture looks like a late Series 2 one which as you say was also fitted to the XJ6.

Thanks boys, it is possible that the filter housing is wrong. I have been through a few 4.2 engines over the last few years.
I have another e-type engine so I will pull the pressure control valve off that tomorrow and check it out.

Hi James...the balance valve i was refering to is fitted in the position arrowed....they are staked in place....this housing had the valve missing...they can fall out......oil then will bypass the filter if its missing.....the balance valve is there incase the filter gets blocked it will open to let oil continue to flow to prevent oil starvation...ensure its fitted the correct way around......Steve

With valve in place..zoom in to see it
