Timing chain intermediate dumper:3.8 vs. 4.2 setup - any advantages?

There are 2 different intermediate dampers used on the 3.8 and the 4.2 engines:









Is there any advantage of the 4.2 setup??

I am in the middle of my rebuild and I realized that my 3.8 engine must have been modified by the PO to suit the 4.2 damper. This means I can mount either one.

Any advice?

Ask Rob Beere ; the only engine parts supplier where you don't get an idiot on the 'phone, and where the guy has done the job you're about to do hundreds of times, and who will sell you the same parts as they use on their own engines.

I actually called him yesterday.

The 4.2 setup is slightly better due to the size and position, however he also mentioned there is nothing wrong with the old design, provided the bend in the damper is strengthened by a pressed reinforcement.

Fortunately (thanks largely to this forum) I located Mr Beere's island before setting out on my restoration voyage, set a direct course, and landed on it without a hitch...
