series 1 3.8 heater

can anyone advise IF all cars have covers on the air into the cabin (small hinged doors) or are some just open?

Series 1's have the pull open flap and I think 2's and 3's have the screw cable on the dash which opens a plastic vent.

Yes the S1 cars all have heater flaps which are fairly useless. Best option is tro replace them with the vents offered by Clayton:
