Fuel filter casing removal

Hi All

I tried to remove the fuel filter bowl casing from my series 2 and when I removed the glass bowl before disconnecting the pipes I had a continuous flow of petrol coming out of the hole which the filter sits up against. Is this just the fuel from the carbs flowing back and will it stop after a while or do I need to put some sort of temporary "bung" in the hole?

Also, when I reconnect everything will I need to bleed the system?

The fuel won’t drain back from the carb float chambers. The needle valves are on the top of the float chambers. The fuel is probably coming from the lines to the carburettors. It should stop eventually, but it won’t harm to use a clean bung.

You won’t need to manually bleed the system afterwards. The electric fuel pump will purge all the air through when you turn the ignition on. Just wait a little longer than normal between switching the ignition on and trying to start the car. Once the fuel pump has stopped ticking, you should be good to go.

Some further advice please.

I have refitted the fuel filter but now have a persistent weep of petrol from the washer nearest the filter casting where the fuel feed pipe joins the casting. I have tightened the banjo as much as I dare and dont want to risk over tightening it.

Should I have replaced the washers with new fibre ones? The existing ones are aluminium.

The existing washers might have work hardened. Also check there’s no nicks or scratches on either the washers, or their mating faces.
