#1 In take manifold / thermostat housing issue

Post by Grant » Mon May 18, 2020 6:40 pm

Hi All

I’m just changing from strombergs to SU’s and it’s proving to be a bit more complicated than it should be! :-)
The manifold has a small triangle hole nest to the main hole that leads to the thermostat housing .(pic below)
But the thermostat housing from the stromberg set up did not, I was assured by a guy from the jag shop (independent advice) that they were the same and I did not need to change it but they are definitely different .so did they change half way through ?
I bought a replacement from Sng part no.C 28212 but that’s the same as the one I had from the strombergs.
The only thing I could find on their site was a thermostat housing gasket with the triangle cut but as of tonight they have not got back to me with what the difference is .
Any help would much appreciated as I have a mechanic waiting to come and set up the carbs and the sun is out!!
Thank you

Grant

Hi Grant...you should be ok useing that gasket..the opening and slot bypass was for a sleeve type thermostat but you have the thermostat houseing that uses a foot type thermostat to open and close the bypass....have a close look and understand how the bypass and thermostat works then all should become clear...Steve

Looking at SNG’s website, the difference is between S1 4.2 and S2. The manifold is the same part number, but on the S1 the thermostat fits in the end of the manifold, and the triangle is the route for the bypass. On the S2, the thermostat mounts in your separate housing and the triangle hole serves no function.

Hi Steve and Tom

Thank you both for your quick replies, that’s a relief so I can use my housing with this manifold , annoyingly the gasket in the picture is the one they did not send me !
So I may order one tomorrow or maybe just make one with some gasket paper!

Thank you very much again you have made my day !

Which gasket do you have? So long as it seals all round, it shouldn’t matter whether the triangle is there or not

Hi Tom

Well that’s what I would thought but hunting round on here there is a post called “thermostat housing gasket confusion “ in that ther is a link
http://etype.chrisvine.com/tag/cooling/
And in that he says how he made the mistake of using the plane round gasket but the water comes out of the triangle and leaks so you have to make sure it covers that part too, I hope that make sense,
but as I said if I make one it should be easy enough to cover that to. Fingers crossed.

I think the gasket referred to on Chris Vine’s blog is the one for the other end of the housing. So long as your gasket follows the perimeter of the mating face (I.e. outside the triangle) you’ll be ok. If you make one, you don’t need to cut the triangle out.

Hi Tom

Yes that how I understand it out the triangle , I will let you know tomorrow, I’m also fitting a 123 Bluetooth distributor so I may be picking your brains about that tomorrow!

Thanks again
