My handbrake cable has been rubbing on the prop shaft at the rear end of the tunnel. This caused a frightful noise making me think the gearbox was on its way out.
On having a good look the cable has been tied to the tunnel side with a piece of locking wire which subsequently broke hence the rubbing.

I can’t see how the cable should be fixed, all I have are 2 small holes in the tunnel side where if exits the bulkhead. Should a fixing bracket or similar be here?

Thoughts appreciated.

Hi Tim,

You should have an oval shaped bracket spot welded to the n/a rear of the transmission tunnel with an oval grommet in it. The cable passes through this. My car is up in the air at the moment, I'll take a pic and post it for you if that helps.

Depends on how early the car is. The early ones had a spring that held the cable away. Later on, there was an oval with a grommet that the cable passes through.

That bracket is missing on mine so I will make one up & the grommet seems easy to obtain.

Tim, for what it’s worth on my S2 OTS project there was a small piece of foam on the propshaft tunnel next to that bracket. As though to stop the handbrake cable knocking against the tunnel. Whether original or not
