#1 2.88 rear end and All Synchro S1/S2 Gearbox differences.

Post by politeperson » Wed Jun 10, 2020 4:56 pm

I think I have just figured out why I have been so happy with my 2.88 setup and other owners havent.

We both have all synchro boxes and 2.88 rear ends.

I didn't realise that first gear on the S1 gearbox is taller that the S2 gearbox.

This means I am having to slip the clutch far less than and S1 driver.

The S1 gearbox first rear ratio is listed as 2.68:1

The S2 ratios is ration was changed to 2.933:1.

10% less slippage?

Maybe that accounts for the difference?

I have an S2 with a 2.88. No complaints from me either.

One of the pitfalls of the CR gearbox I am afraid - revered of course - but better with 3.31:1 or 3.07:1

Except that the Moss gearbox has a first gear ratio of 3.377:1. So the 3.8 cars will require even less clutch slip than the later Series 1 4.2 and the series 2 cars.

I remember moving off from rest in my old 3.8 fhc without any throttle - just gently raise the clutch pedal , can`t do it with the present car ...now I know why .

Also , I`m thinking off switching to 2.88 … how do I know if I have the S1 or S2 gearbox ? ( `68 1.5 ) :salute:

The gearbox number should confirm what you have.
