Hi, on removing the rear seat of my series 1 2+2, I came across this hole in the floor next to the inner wing. Similar on the other side. They are filled with a sort of fibreglass wool, like you would use for roof insulation. It was tucked away inside the hole. I certainly have not put it there and I've owned the car for 24 years. Is it something that the factory did? If so why? If not then why would anyone put it in there?

Hi Steve, found the same material in mine when I was cutting some rot out, it started smouldering and it really stinks when it does, also produces a huge amount of smoke. I would suggest removing it all as I think it helps the corrosion by holding moisture.
The photo shows what I had to remove on my Ser.2 2+2.

Aston Martin DB4/5/6 used lambswool for noise insulation in cavities but that attracted moisture and caused rot. If you want to replace the insulation I suggest looking at the polyester acoustic wadding that is used in speaker cabinets or in furniture.
