Just got mine on the road,& it sounds like a good,old fashioned layshaft rattle.Is this a common problem?Easy to fix?

No not really
Depends what you consider easy
Series 3 cars you can get the gearbox out without removing the engine but that's the only easy bit
You then have to strip the gearbox if you are confident enough and re build it and hope its just the layshaft
Could be a lot more and to be honest you would probably replace all service items in the box at this point
The clutch, prop shaft ujs and anything else in that area thats hard to get to normally
Or just fit a re con gearbox
All in all a fair bit of work and also depends what you consider expensive
