#1 Dynator Pulley

Hello,

I have installed a WOSP dynator on my 3.8 but it is not charging well. Today whilst driving the voltmeter was registering 13V but dropped below 12V when the fan came on. I sent it back to WOSP but they returned it saying it was working perfectly. So now I am thinking I need a smaller pulley as it currently has the old dynamo pulley. However the 4.2 pulley I ordered has a different offset and would need to be ‘shimmed’ with washers to align with the other pulleys. Is this how it is done or does someone know where I can find a pulley with the right offset? The usuals all seem to sell only the 4.2 style of pulley.

Thanks

Myles

Thanks Steve, Indeed I’ve read the posts but none seem to reference where I can get a pulley with the right offset. I’ve tried SNG, Moss, Fosseway etc but no luck so far....

Hi Myles...How does the standard pully attach...is it just pressed on to the desired position......have you seen the powerlite 60mm pulley.... Steve

Before you start changing things are you sure your diagnosis is correct?
Did you bypass the bulkhead regulator properly?
Have you checked the output with an avo meter?
Are you sure your volt guage is reading correctly?
Voltage and amperage are two different things
Your alternator is designed to lower its charge rate as the battery becomes full
Check it with a meter
It should be charging at 13.8 to 14.2 volts

I also wonder about the original diagnosis,I have a Hitachi alternator my 3.8 uses the pulley off the dynamo, charges fine at idle, even with the cooling fan on.

I also have a Wosp dynator fitted to my ‘62 3.8. Basically it did not charged from the start. My local alternator guy found that it did not work at all and re soldered all internal wiring and now works great. I initially had my old generator pulley fitted which did not charge at idle but was fine when driving. I had a shop fit a slightly smaller one so all is well now. More of a pain than I expected it to be though honestly but I’m happy now.
