The 'E' Type Forum

I've looked extensively on this forum for an answer, but found nothing definitive. My neighbour bought an early 64 4.2 convertible and he is not knowledgeable on car care, so I am helping him. I've spent my lifetime looking after my cars to high mileages, but am not a mechanic. I noticed that someone had made a mess of the ignition wires going through the conduit and the conduit is broken off the brackets. When I put the new conduit on, the temptation of course is to just remove the two acorn nuts that hold the brackets on. However, I am concerned that the tightening sequence of the head nuts will be disturbed and cause leakage problems. Should I slacken all the nuts off and retorque?

Thanks for any guidance. I'm new to this forum and appreciate the opportunity to learn how to maintain this car. It did come with a period Bentley manual, which is very helpful.

Just loosen the two acorn nuts retaining the conduit. You can buy a replacement from SNGB. No harm will be done. The nuts will only be off for a couple of minutes!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to give your advice David. It saves me time and gives me peace of mind. I have been studying the manual to make sure I do everything required for proper maintenance and will enjoy doing it. I've never worked on a Jag before, but these are lovely cars that deserve to be properly preserved.

The other thing to do prior to fitting your conduit is to use a file or a Dremel and enlarge the holes for the wires.
