Dear Brethren,

What are the pitfalls of replacing the front engine mounts with the engine in situ?
Can the engine be lifted a few inches by jacking it up under the sump with a suitable block of wood to spread the load or do I risk cracking the sump?
Dont want to create an even bigger problem.
Any advice from the experts would once again be much appreciated.

I'm not an expert but thats what i did.
There's a bit of adjustment available so check before tightening up the new ones.

The engine and gearbox can sit safely on the sump out of the car. I would use a piece of wood maybe 8x12x2" on top of your jack.

I'd also be tempted to disconnect your rear engine stabiliser then re-tighten it once you have your new mounts in place.

Hi Nigel...as above...just to reinforce dont jack directly on the sump its only aluminium....definatly use a large spread block of flat timber on top of the jack......if you have an engine crane/lift then you could lift from above...Steve

It’s an easy job, but definitely slacken the rear engine stabiliser to allow movement there behind the engine against the bulkhead mounting. Ensure the Jack is lifting on wooden packing to spread the load on the sump.
You will be surprised how much the old mounts will have distorted and flattened. Be careful when inserting the new mounts ensure that the engine sits “squarely” in the final weighted position. Only after both new mounts have been loosely installed should the mounting Set Screws be tightened in the slots on the engine mounting brackets with the full weight of the engine applied.
Also check if there should be the Packing Piece, part number C18242, fitted to your car on the right hand side, (carburettor side) to lift the engine on that side. The 4.2 Parts Lists shows quantity 2, but normally only one is used. These were certainly fitted on 4.2 Series 1 E types to ensure the accelerator linkage clears the engine frame. Without this shim, there is a potential for the throttle linkage to jam on the frame and not release. By fitting new engine mounts correctly, this also reduces this potentially disastrous scenario. A good COVID Lockdown check job !
