#1 Roof racks for e-types: do they exist? Can i get one made?

Here follows a strange request: Basically i require an easily removable classic style roof rack (similar to the ones seen on old Beetles) for 2 surf boards as the modern 'soft' rack i have purchased (please see attached image) is scuffing the roof paintwork & the innevitable grain of sand could prove disastrous to the paint & as the straps pass through the car it is putting pressure on the widow frames.
I use the car almost every day during the summer to drive the 5 miles to the beach.
I am happy to have one custom made that follows the curve of the roof line in a period style if there is no other choice.
I know some of you may consider fitting a roof rack as sacrilige but form will have to follow function as driving an E-type home after an early evening surf is one of lifes real pleasures.
However the thought of damaging the roof 'gutter' chrome trim with a 'gutter' attached rack is also a huge consideration.
Does anyone have a good looking solution to this question?

Thanks, Bert

Hi Bert
How seriously cool...an E Type with boards on top!!

You'll probably have to try an old rack and modify to fit. I can't imaging anything bigger than a Mini roof rack fitting, and here's one for sale:

You can protect the chrome trim with rubber strips.

Let us know how you get on.

I believe the bikes fell off at speed though!

You could try these people: http://www.roofrackshop.co.uk/boot/jagu ... t-rack.htm I do like that Mini one if it will fit.

I actually like the roof rack above on the Series 3 as it's minimalist & looks easy to remove, i might try & find a similar chrome one or copy the S3 rack in Stainless steel. I might also try & find a pair of those trousers at the same to complete the overall look.
Thanks,
Bert.
