#1 Stripped gearbox support captive nut

Post by keithmac » Thu Oct 22, 2020 9:30 pm

Ahhhh...and hits just keep on comin!
As you can see from the picture ,one of the four bolts that hold the rear engine/gearbox mount has a stripped captive nut. Just noticed it loose....tightened it and it never made it to even snug before that sinking feeling of a spinning bolt ( the bolt is fine )
So How the heck do I fix this ? the nut is inside the frame and inaccessible as near as I can see and it wiggles a bit.
Try to tap it too the next size? ( not promising with a wiggly nut )
Try to drill it all out and install a "rivet nut" ?
Either way ,its going to be yet another character building challenge.

Any suggestions or insights would be much appreciated :salute:

Hi
These nuts are accessible inside the passenger and driver compartment flush with the gearbox tunnel cover.
You could weld the nut and used an helicoil to repair.

I discovered this on my car. A PO (a well known and now defunct “World’s largest retailer of E-Types”) had fitted the support, very bent, and using bolts rather than set screws. It was the Use of bolts with shanks longer than the distance through the captives which destroyed the threads. On my car nearly all the captive nuts were under the car, not in the passenger cabin. I put new nuts onto of the old captives, holding them in place by jamming them into a ring spanner with paper. Twas a fiddle but it worked. This was after I had ‘adjusted’ the support back into (flat) shape.
