#1 Gaz shockers best or basic setting to start off with

Post by Joes66 » Mon Nov 02, 2020 5:02 pm

Hi all
I am shortly, lol hopefully, going to get my series 2 2+2 1969 back on the road
I have done a mechanical rebuild of most of the car and fitted the gaz adjustable shocks all round
My question is to anyone thats done this before on the same car
Whats the best basic setting to start of with?
Or even better what setting did someone get to for a good all round ride?
Yes I know its trial and error but it could save me a huge amount of time sodding around
The rears are adjustable platform type which I have set at their lowest setting to start with
And I have put the knob on the adjustables at 4 positions in from rock bottom
Both front and back
I have fitted cnc springs
Many thanks for any answers
Joe

Hi Joe....do you mean CMC rear springs.......i thought that with the Gaz adjustable height rear dampers you had to use special shorter springs or you end up with a high ride height......SNGB supply both as a matched set.....or are your rear springs also shorter....Steve

I'd start at the softest setting all round and go from there.

Just checked and it looks about right
I have 9 1/2 inches from centre of spinner to wheel arch lip
And about 7 3/4 inches from floor to the irs bottom plate
There is no info on ride height in the manual for the rear as I can see
What do others have?
Cheers

Hi Joe....im intetested in what you actually have.....could you post a photo of shocks /springs if poss......CMC springs have been mentioned on the forum before as giving a correct rear ride height on standard type shocks...however as i mentioned the SNGB adjustable height Gaz shocks need a shorter than standard spring..in discussions with SNG they told me that if you use a standard length spring with their adjustable height Gaz the ride height would be considerably high........so what shocks do you have...and are the CMC springs standard or short....or did you get a package (shock/spring) from CMC...Thanks..Steve

Hi Steve
I got the standard springs from cmc as I remember
Can't remember if I said I was using them with gaz shocks though
I did have a long conversation with them about the springs and they said they fit them to all thier cars and had had them specially made to give as near as possible the best ride possible
I got the gaz shocks direct from gaz and I had to wait 6 weeks for them to make them
They are adjustable platform and I have set them near to the bottom of the threads on the adjustment
There is still about half and inch or so I could go lower however
Once I have run the car over some humps etc I can re measure the heights
I will get some pictures

Yes that looks like them
But its not easy to tell
The car sits fine so I don't know about the shorter springs thing
Also as I say I haven't driven the car yet so it will without doubt drop a bit
And I have an empty petrol tank as well
Will get some pictures

Thinking about it
Why would gaz make replacement shocks that would need a non standard length spring?
When I bought the shocks there was no mention from gaz that they needed a shorter spring
I am sure they would state that was the case if it was true
Mostly because a shorter spring may not be available and would make these shocks un usable
What are these shorter springs exactly?
Is SNG making them especially?
Its possible being a 2+2 with the extra weight would drop the car more than a non 2+2 but as i say no mention from gaz that they needed a non standard spring

Hi Joe ..this is the link to the rear Gaz 8in spring made for their adjustable platform shock.....SNGB were and probably still are useing them on their demo EE 50 E type.........there has been a problem with replacement rear springs not giveing a satisfactiry rear ride height.....Useing this spring and adjustable shock gave an option to solve the rear ride height.......However some have used standard Shocks and the CMC spring as this was quoted as giveing a correct ride height......A forum member did put standard springs onto the Gaz adjustable in error which gave a ride height that was too high......Thats when i discussed with the SNG tech guys that the agjustable shock on their demo car used the Gaz shorter springs.....Steve

Hi Joe, I have GAZ adjustable height rears on my S1 FHC and remember well having to buy shorter springs to suit. I did fit my originals to find the car sat very high with the shocks set at their lowest.
I have GAZ shocks on the front too and have them all set at damping position 5 which seems to work well.

Cheers
