#1 Bondo Bomber

Post by Durango2k » Mon Sep 11, 2017 7:30 pm

Oh yeah, I finally tackled the bonnet / nose section. I knew there would be trouble, because there are dents inside but nothing outside.

I found, as expected, about one inch of filler on the nose. At least the mouth itself is somewhat ok, but just above the mouse, dang, deep deep holes all way.

Here it comes:

Hi Carsten,

It doesn't look good, but at least it's all metal. With a bit of panel beating that will be fine.

Here is mine after removing the filler:

And after welding up the slide hammer holes and a bit of panel beating:

A bit of primer filler:

Not perfect, but passable.

You can do it!

....I'd rather prefer Silicone Valley but Bondo Snow Storm, but that's life.

I'll have it completely taken down to bare metal, and after that's done, I'll see a professional panel beater. He says it should be do-able, least resort is to cut out and weld in new metal.

Maybe I pull it all out, and use a shrinking disc ?

A shrinking disc is a great tool, but only for final finishing.

I cannot even find a german offering for them. Maybe I'll import one.

I got my disc from the USA.

It is basically a stainless steel flat disc with an upturned edge fitted to an angle grinder.

The idea is to rub it over the lumpy but reasonably smooth surface. It heats up the high spots by friction, which you then cool with an air gun or water to shrink the high spots to make a flat surface.

I was rather sceptical before I bought one, but it works great.
