#1 New rear splined hub problems

Post by MarkW » Sat Nov 04, 2023 5:58 pm

I’m trying to install new splined hubs + bearings etc to my early rear hub carriers (C19063 LM 10). The ‘flingers’ (which seem to be integral with all the hubs currently on the market ) are preventing the splined hub fully engaging with the carrier. These were not part of my old splined hubs.

Has anybody removed these? If so how please?

Thanks,
Mark

They should fit, but repro parts sometimes don't...

They are supposed to throw water away from the hub, but I don't have them fitted to some of my cars.

You should be able to remove them; they're usually spot welded in a couple of places.

Alternatively you could reshape it so it fits.

Hi Mark,

If my memory serves me correctly, the early hub carriers weren’t designed to work with the later splined hubs with the flingers. The later hub carriers had a chamfered edge to allow for the flinger.

What you can do is just put a chamfer on the hub carrier - careful use of an angle grinder with a flap disk, followed by a hand file will obtain the desired results.

Hi Chris,
I was initially a bit spooked by this idea but looking online I can see that later hubs have a chamfer on the outer rim and a definite notch in the webs to match. Tonight I’ll get the grinder out!
Thanks for your help,
Mark

Dont!

Cut off the flingers by all means, but don't modify your hub carriers.

:yeahthat: dont grind down rare parts.....remove the flinger....or fit later hub carriers and sell the originals if you dont want them they can fetch quite a price. .....Steve

OK moment of madness has passed, I’ll attempt to get the flingers off!
There is a cross- hatch machine peening all around the join so I will probably have to grind this away somehow. Pity I fitted the taper rollers before I realised the new splined hubs with flingers wouldn’t be compatible….
Thanks for the sanity check.
Best regards,
Mark

If you have access to a lathe it would be the work of a moment to remove them from the hub.
