Hello, we are about to refit the fuel tank and associated pipes, vents etc. We have the original carbon canister and were pondering the following:

1/ is it necessary and what would the consequence be if we simply left it out of the circuit and vent to atmosphere rather than through the canister? Has anyone done this - the only aspect that would concern me is the smell that might result at the rear end of the car.. MOT does not deal with evaporative emissions on a car this age just exhaust CO2 levels. correct?

2/ is the original canister still likely to function after many years ? I wouldn't see why not - as I wouldn't have expected the carbon tp have reacted with anything .... anyone have any knowledge on this?

I am interested to know what innovative solutions other owners have found? Many thanks...

Are referring to the canister under the bonnet or the little tank nesstled in the boot rear wing near the fuel tank?
The later is an expansion tank and some other threads here have suggested it's not really necessary ...

Um, which planet are you on? If u have it, why not use it, there is no disadvantage? It also, on some cars, vents the crankcase. I would expect that, if it was OEM, MOT would expect it to still be there ...

I did not think UK spec cars had a charcoal canister and only had the fuel tank expansion chamber up in the passenger side rear wing.

Well, my car certainly does not have the canister.

Thanks for the input Gentlemen.. I am not aware of any other cars which have this expansion tank. I had thought it was to help manage tank breathing and fumes etc . thank you.
